Brass
This is the highest voice of the brass family, and is the smallest instrument.
The trumpet.
This is the most common string instrument in the orchestra, and is the smallest.
The violin, or the fiddle.
This silver-looking woodwind instrument is played sideways by blowing air over an open hole.
The flute.
This is a big drum that is the heartbeat of the orchestra.
Bass drum.
This is the biggest and lowest-sounding instrument in the brass family.
The tuba.
This string instrument is large and has a frame that strings are attached to. It is the only string instrument in the orchestra that looks unlike the others.
The harp.
This instrument is played by Squidward in Spongebob. It is straight and black and uses a reed (a small piece of wood).
Clarinet.
This instrument is made of bars of wood and is played with a mallet.
Xylophone.
This instrument is named after the earliest brass instruments, and was often used in hunting, sports, and special celebrations.
The horn (or French horn).
This string instrument is so large that it has to be played standing up!
The bass.
This instrument is gold-colored, and we often think of it as a jazz instrument. It uses a reed (a small piece of wood) and has a big bend in it.
The saxophone.
These drums can be tuned and their sides are made of copper.
Timpani or kettle drum.
This instrument is the only instrument in the brass family that uses a slide to change pitches.
The trombone.
This string instrument is played while seated with the instrument held between the legs.
The cello.
These instruments are both "double-reed" instruments, which means that instead of a single piece of wood to create the sound, they use two that are tied together.
Oboe and bassoon.
These large metal discs can be crashed together to create a loud sound.
Cymbals.
This brass instrument is not part of the orchestra, but is common in bands and brass quintets.
The baritone.
This string instrument is not in the orchestra, but is in lots of music and requires an amplifier to make its sound heard.
Electric guitar.
This instrument is the lowest instrument of the woodwind section, and is a larger version of another double-reed instrument.
The contrabassoon.
This instrument, although it has strings, is considered a percussion instrument because the strings are struck by small hammers. It is one of the most common ones and we have one in our classroom!
