They depended on their environment for food and materials to make clothing, shelter, tools and transportation. Their religion taught them respect for all of nature. They had their own political systems and national boundaries

What is a boarding school?
A boarding school is a school where some or all pupils study and live during the school year with their fellow students and possibly teachers and/or administrators. The word 'boarding' is used in the sense of "bed and board," i.e., lodging and meals. Some boarding schools also have day students who attend the institution by day and return off-campus to their families in the evenings.

How did Native Americans feel about boarding schools and why?
Native Americans resisted these boarding schools and European education. Parents believed they could teach their children all they needed to know. They taught them tribal languages, cultures and belief systems.

Describe what Native Americans boarding schools are like today.
Modern day boarding schools no longer force “American” beliefs onto students and instead preach traditional Native American values Today, few off-reservation boarding schools exists and they receive very low funding. Some believe these should be shut down due to their repressive history. Others believe that they should continue to exist and provide an alternative to on-reservation education as well as provide a way for students to escape reservation issues such as drug abuse and poverty.
