What is the first step to the scientific method?

Question/Problem

100

What is the third step in the scientific method?

Experiment

100

What is the final step in the scientific method?

Re-Test

 The molecular formula for water:

H2O

100

How many atoms of Hydrogen are in a water molecule?

2

200

Define Hypothesis

A prediction that is made for the outcome of an experiment.  A statement that can be supported or refuted.

200

A student notices that marsh grasses grow taller in some places than others

Observation

200

The first cells may have been able to arise out of the conditions of early Earth

Inference

200

What kind of bond keeps the hydrogen atoms and oxygen atoms together in a water molecule?

Covalent

200

Define a covalent bond

Two atoms are bonded together by sharing their electron

300

How can a refuted hypothesis lead to a new investigation?

It can lead to new questions and answers

300

What is the difference between an observation and an inference?

Observations are when we gain information about our surroundings using our senses.  A conclusion reached using evidence ( observations and reasoning)

300

If a graph is used to display data or information that changes continuously over time.  Looking to see overall trends such as an increase or decrease in data over time

Line Graph

300

The Oxygen atom in a water molecule has a “slightly” what charge?

-

300

The Hydrogen atoms in a water molecule have a “slightly” what charge?

+

400

Define Theory:

A well tested explanation that unifies a broad range of observations and hypothesis that allows scientists to make accurate predictions about new situations

400

Define Law:

Specific Descriptions about how some aspect of the natural world is expected to behave under a certain set of conditions

400

If a graph only has one set of quantitative data ( numerical data) which type of graph should you use? Comparing quantities in different categories or groups

Bar Graph

400

Water is a polar molecule.  What does it mean for a molecule to be polar?  What would you compare it too?

Water is polar which means that it has poles like a magnet.  It has a positive pole and a negative pole

400

Does a nonpolar molecule dissolve in water? Do non polars share electrons equally or unequally?

No and equally

Explain why scientific investigations must be repeatable & why a control is necessary

It must be repeatable in order to validate the results.  It also makes the experiment more reliable.  Other people must be able to complete the experiment and achieve the same results.  It proves the results were not random or due to error.

500

Describe how the word “theory” is used differently in everyday language than it is in science.

Theory is often used to describe an idea in everyday language.  But, this is not how it is used in science.  A theory must be tested numerous times by many different scientists all obtaining the same results.

500

What is the IV and DV in this experiment?

IV: Time

DV: # of Bacteria

500

Describe hydrogen bonds.

Hydrogen bonds are the bonds between more than water molecule.  They happen when the oppositely charged areas of the water molecules attract eachther.  These bonds are what sticks the water molecules together.  They are weak bonds that can be made, broken, and reformed.  These bonds are what gives water its many properties.

500

What is the difference between Cohesion and Adhesion?

Cohesion is water molecules sticking to other water molecules.  Adhesion is water molecules sticking to other surfaces.
