Missouri Compromise set up Missouri as a slave state, added Maine as a free state, and drew a line below Missouri which said that all states added above the line would be free states. Came to be because Missouri wanted to join the U.S. as a slave state and would have been unbalanced in Congress with 1 more slave state than free state.
