Remain calm. Provide reassurance that you are there to listen and support. Ask if she wants to talk about it and give positive redirection if needed.

During a game of musical chairs, David became upset when he lost the round. He walked to the back of the classroom, grabbed a chair and threw it to the side of the classroom. After repeatedly being told to calm down, David continued to grab more chairs attempting to throw it. Staff evacuated the classroom and called for management support.
Level 2 (major impact on the Club environment; intentional physical aggression and disruption of program).
Stay calm, ensure safety by separating the members. Move other youth away from the situation if needed (“clearing the room” if the group cannot remain safe). Use verbal de-escalation and maintain safe distance. Site Management steps in to determine next steps, which includes contacting caregivers and/or having the member picked up for the day.
Management should notify the Area Director/Division Director by end of day. Caregivers of all involved youth should be contacted before the end of the day. Use restorative language with the member once calm: “What happened? Who was affected? How can we make it right?”
Yes. An Incident Report should be completed the same day. A Member Behavior Notice will be required to document the physical aggression and intervention.
