What is Rhythm?
A unified group of lines in poetry. This is often marked by spacing between sections of the poem.
What is a stanza?
When a word sounds like what it is. Examples of this include hissed, crackle, and splash.
What is onomatopoeia?
Poetry that does not have rhyme, meter, or any rules.
What is free verse?
A comparison of two unrelated things using the words "like" or "as." For example, "My love is like a red, red rose."
What is a simile?
Rhyme that is inside a line and not just at the end of a line.

An example of this is: "Sara's seven sisters slept soundly."
What is alliteration?
Poetry that has rhyme, meter, and sometimes has rules about end rhyme and syllables.
What is structured poetry?
A comparison of two unrelated things NOT using the words "like" or "as." For example, "My hearts a stereo."
What is a metaphor?
Rhyme that only has one sound in common instead of two sounds in common.
What is slant rhyme, approximate rhyme, or half rhyme?
The attitude the poem's narrator takes toward a subject or character.
What is tone?
Lines of stressed and unstressed syllables are broken down into these.
What is feet?
This type of poetry is a cross between Free Verse and structured poetry. It doesn't have rhyme, but it has rhythm and sometimes a set meter.
What is blank verse?
An object or action that means something more than its literal meaning.
What is a symbol?
The rhyme the comes at the ends of the lines of poetry.
What is rhyme scheme or end rhyme?
The author's specific word choice.
What is diction?
The repeating of vowel sounds within words. For example, "Men sell the wedding bells."
What is assonance?
A poem that tells a story in verse and is meant to be sung. These poems also double as narrative poems (poems that tell a story).
What is a ballad?
The central meaning or dominant message (or lesson) the poet is trying to deliver to the reader.
What is a theme?
The measured arrangement of sounds or beats in a poem, including the poet's placement of emphasis and the number of syllables per line. *Hint: We break this arrangement down into feet.
What is meter?
This occurs when one line ends without a pause or any punctuation and continues onto the next line.
What is enjambment?
The repeating of consonant sounds within words. For example, "The zoo was amazing, especially the lizards and chimpanzees.
What is consonance?
A short poem that is full of emotion. It is often meant to be accompanied by music.
What is a lyric?
A brief reference to a real or fictional person, event, place, or work of art.
