What time does staff report to work?

Regular Contract day 

Our students are excited to see our staff everyday! All staff are expected to be at school on time. The day for core teachers begins at 8:05 am and ends at 3:35 pm. The duty for Specials teachers, Special Education teachers, and EAs begins at 8:15 and ends at 3:45. Attendance at faculty meetings and other designated functions/duties is mandatory as per school contracts.

According to the student handbook, name 2 reasons and absence can be considered "excused"? 

Excused Absences Absences may be excused for the following reasons with proper notification: • Illness (including chronic illness documented on a health plan, IEP or 504 plan) • Limited family emergencies • Family deaths • Medical, health or legal appointments • Suspensions • Religious holidays • Native American Cultural Events (Please note that students will only be 24 BERNALILLO PUBLIC SCHOOLS - STUDENT HANDBOOK | 2021-2022 excused for the days expressly stated by the Pueblo Governors) • College visits • Deployment of a military parent • Limited extenuating circumstances as approved in advance by the school principal Students will be allowed to make up work for excused days missed at the rate of 1 school day per day of excused absence.

What system do we use for our gradebook?

Grading 

The grade book is a public record subject to review by parent 

and/or administration. Teachers will explain to students and parents the details of the grading system and will keep parents informed regarding missing assignments and/or failing grades. The teachers’ grade records will indicate the activity and the date when the grade was recorded. Grades will be kept up to date and include at least 2 grades per week. 

The following guidelines will be implemented in order to guarantee a uniform system. 

Electronic Grade Books are utilized via PowerSchool. Every teacher will use the PowerSchool electronic grade book. 

The general education teachers and the special education teacher will work collaboratively to ensure Individual Education Plans (IEP’s) are followed and student modifications and accommodations are met for students who are receiving Special Education services. 

Every effort will be made by the teacher to assist a student who is having difficulty or has a zero for an assignment grade. 

Academic Progress Reports 

Teachers will communicate with parents when a student is having academic difficulty in any subject. Progress reports may be sent home daily, weekly, monthly and will be sent home at the end of the 4th week of the grading period. The student agenda may be used to communicate with parents regarding grades, positive messages, and problem behaviors. Teachers will also communicate by phone on a regular basis to keep parents informed. 

Report Cards will be sent home a week after the end of grading quarter. Report cards are STANDARDS BASED. Please make sure to provide Amy a copy of the report for all Native American Students.

Unexcused All absences for reasons not included under excused absences shall be considered unexcused. Examples include, but are not limited to: • Non-school sponsored activities or trips • Family vacations outside of the normally scheduled school breaks • Non-approved cultural activity days

What are some situations that an employee can use their sick leave for? 

Sick Leave is to be used for: a. Personal illness or injury that prevents the employee from working: b. Illness or injury to a member of the employee’s immediate family. c. Medical appointments that cannot be scheduled during non-working hours. Except in an emergency, an employee shall provide a minimum of twenty four (24) hours notice of the appointment to the employee’s supervisor. 7. The immediate family includes the employee’s spouse, child, grandchild, brother, sister, parent, and grandparent. 8. Employees shall be expected to notify their immediate supervisor of their absences as soon as possible, so that a substitute can be assigned, if required.

Can students use their phones in the classroom or as an incentive? 

No, students are not allowed to use their phones in the classroom.

Students are not allowed to use cell phones during the school day and teachers will not allow the use of cell phones to contact parents or as an incentive in the classroom.

How many days of personal leave does employee have for the school year? 

1. At the beginning of each school term each employee shall be credited with four (4) days of personal leave to be used for an employee’s personal business that cannot be scheduled during non-working hours. Unused personal leave days shall be accumulated as sick leave. 2. A personal leave day may be used for any purpose at the discretion of the employee. An employee planning to use a personal leave day or days shall submit a request for leave to the employee’s supervisor at least forty-eight (48) hours in advance, except in cases of emergency. The employee shall suffer no loss of pay for such leave and any unused leave days shall be accumulated as sick leave. The employees shall not be required to give reasons for such leave, except that the leave is for “Personal Reasons.” Personal leave cannot be taken the day before or after a holiday or during the first or last week of school unless the supervisor is notified five (5) days in advance and the supervisor and Director of Human Resources have approved the leave. 3. Upon separation of employment, there will be no compensation for unused personal leave.

Who handles Level 1 infractions from our discipline matrix? Level 2? Level 3? 

Discipline referrals 

All referrals are to adhere to the district-wide discipline policy and matrix. Please reference the Discipline Matrix located in the Parent/Student handbook and current Discipline referral available in the front office. 


Level 1: Will be addressed by the teacher in the classroom in accordance with the teachers classroom management policy. Students who are sent to the office with a level 1 infraction will be sent back to the classroom. 


Level 2: Teachers are expected to send the referral to the office and keep the student in class, ensuring privacy of every student at all times. The Principal or office staff will contact the teacher to send the student to the office. 


Level 3: Teachers or referring staff will send/escort the student to the office immediately and ensure the safety of all others involved. If safety to others becomes a concern, contact the office immediately.

How long must you be employed before you can enroll in the sick leave bank at BPS? 

B. Employees with at least twelve (12) consecutive months of employment with the district may enroll in the sick leave bank each fiscal year by voluntarily contributing one (1) day of accrued sick leave to the bank by October 1st of the current fiscal year, to be deducted on the first payroll in October. All days donated are irretrievable. Days contributed by employees who leave the District shall remain in the bank. 

1. To qualify for Sick Leave Bank assistance, an employee must require extended hospitalization or home confinement due to a catastrophic illness or disability. a. Catastrophic illness is defined an illness not consistent with ordinary illness including, but not limited to cancer, heart attack, stroke or major surgery. b. Disability is defined as an illness, accident or injury disabling an individual from employment.

What days are considered "Jeans Day"?

Employee Dress Code 

All District employees are to present themselves in an acceptable manner. Suitable district attire is expected to be neat, clean and compatible with the District’s educational and academic philosophy. All employees are expected to wear their ID badge at all times. 


The following are considered unacceptable attire: 

• Half-shirts 

• tube tops 

• caps 

• shorts 

• blue jeans 

• tight or short skirts 

• sweat suits/clothes 

• torn or rumpled clothing 

• revealing or tight clothing. 

Friday is Spirit Day. Blue jeans and school shirts or colors may be worn.
