What is the independent variable in an experiment?

What is the variable that is manipulated by the scientist

100

What are the stages of primary succession?

Stage 1: Pioneer Species (Lichens)

Stage 2: Mosses and Ferns

Stage 3: Grasses and Wildflowers

Stage 4: Shrubs and Small Softwood Trees

Stage 5: Larger Hardwood Trees

100

What are the sub-categories of biodiversity?

What are genetic diversity, ecosystem diversity, and species diversity

Draw a logistic growth curve and label the parts of the graph correctly.

Look at white boards for correct answer

100
How do you find growth rate using the crude births and deaths?

Crude births - crude deaths / 10

200

What is the dependent variable in an experiment?

What is the variable that is being measured (it depends on the changes of the independent variable)

200

When does secondary succession occur?

What are areas that had previous biological activity. There was already soil present and there were once organisms that lived there.
200

What are the 4 steps in the process of Eutrophication?

What are excess nutrients creating an algal bloom which turns into oxygen depletion for aquatic organisms underneath the algae, which causes dead zones.

200

Draw an exponential growth curve and label the parts of the graph correctly.

Look at white boards for the answer

If Italy had a crude birth rate of 7 and a crude death rate of 11, what is the population growth rate for Italy?

-0.4%

300

What is mutualism?

What is a relationship where each organism benefits

300

Which type of succession occurs after a volcanic eruption? Why?

What is primary succession because there is no soil present anymore, just barren rocks that need to be broken down by weathering and lichens in order to become soil.
300

Give one example of a conservation effort and describe it.

Captive Breeding Programs

National/State Parks

Prevent Habitat Loss and Habitat Fragmentation

Habitat Restoration Efforts

300

What is a density-dependent factor and give one example.

What is a factor that depends on the number of individuals in the population. Example: diseases, competition, overcrowding

300

If there are 150 cactus plants per square mile in the desert, which population characteristic is this referring to?

What is population density

400
Determine the correct symbiosis relationship given the example below:

Barnacles on a whale

What is commensalism

400

What is a climax community?

What is a successful population of long-lived plant species that last for a very long time. They may not always be the end result of succession, but the climax community had a major impact in re-establishing a habitat and ecosystem in ecological succession.

400

What is biological magnification?

Pollutants continually build up as they move through each trophic level. Organisms are unable to break them down and get rid of them, so the pollutants "magnify" at each level.

400
What is a density-independent limiting factor and give one example.

A limiting factor that does not depend on the number of individuals in the population, they will be affected regardless of population size. Examples: eruption of a volcano, drought, hurricane.

400

Describe carrying capacity of a population

Carrying capacity is the max number of individuals that a population can support.

Identify the independent and dependent variable in the scenario below:

The growth of microbial populations in nature is dynamic, as the cellular physiology and environment of these populations change. Population dynamics have wide-ranging consequences for ecology and evolution, determining how species interact and what limits each population. Scientists wanted to see how nutrient availability affected microbial populations. They set up three petri dishes and introduced E. Coli to all three petri dishes. All three petri dishes were contained at the same temperature level and exposed to the same amount of sunlight. The first petri dish had one gram of sugar added, the second petri dish had five grams of sugar added, and the third petri dish was given no sugar. The scientists then measured the size of each E. Coli population at the end of three days.

Independent Variable: The amount of sugar added to each petri dish

Dependent Variable: The size of each E. Coli population at the end of three days

500

What type of succession occurs when a farmer has abandoned his field?

What is secondary succession

500

Differentiate between renewable and nonrenewable resources and give an example of each.

Nonrenewable resources are used up more quickly than they can be naturally reproduced, whereas renewable resources are naturally replenished as they are used (at a faster rate or the same rate).

500

Explain two ways that a population could see a decrease and two ways that a population could see an increase within the year.

Decrease: Emigration and Death

Increase: Immigration and Births

500

If the growth rate of the United States is 0.92% and they had 308,254,624 people in 2010, approximately how many people will there be in 2020?

336,614,044 people in 2020
