Possible positive intent: Your friend is still allowed to joke with people as other people and your friend may enjoy it. You were not in the room so your friend may have even been attempting to tell a joke while you were not there.

You are sharing a story at the dinner table and your sibling starts to cry. You have no idea why they are crying but it interrupts your story. You think - they always seem to interrupt me. 

Possible positive intent: Your sibling didn't mean to interrupt your story. (The dog was begging and scratched their leg. OR Maybe they dropped their last bite of their favorite food. )

Possible positive intent: The person was commenting in hopes that another worker would open up a register and take some of the pressure off the current cashier.

Possible positive intent: Your teacher wants to help you learn. They know that certain material needs practice to help you remember.

Possible positive intent: Your parent needed to have some space to collect their own emotions and did not want to yell back or become angry with you. They best they could do in that moment was walk away for a few minutes.

Possible positive intent: The driver may be driving with someone in the car who has had a medical crisis. OR Maybe the other car did not see your car.

You call something boring. Other students are saying similar things. It isn't like you to say something like that. During a break your teacher pulls you aside to talk about the impact of what you said. You did not see them pull anyone else aside. 

Potential Positive Intent: My teacher cares about me, my actions, and how I impact others. My teacher wants me to be my best self. I have no way of knowing when or if they will speak to someone else.

You see your friend as you enter the school building. You are happy to see them and you wave at them and say hey. They appear to look at you but keep walking in the direction of the bathroom without saying or doing anything to show that they care.

Possible positive intent: Your friend didn't feel good and they were focused on getting to the bathroom. Or your friend was lost in thought.

Your caregivers are at the end of the driveway and you hear them yelling. You can't see them well. One of them yells, "Stop!" The other one yells, "you have to be kidding me!" 

Possible positive intent: They were alerting a car - maybe there was a car driving by your driveway that had a flat tire or something on the roof. 

OR your parents see someone doing something that means someone could get hurt.

Possible Positive Intent: The book was owned at one time, by the individual who wrote in the book. The owner of the book donated it to the library when they were done. It can be common for students in challenging academic classes - who own a book - to take some notes in the book.
