The stream of our inner experience, this is the state we are in when we are awake
Consciousness
Selective Attention
The tip of the iceberg, this is the focus of our current awareness
Consciousness
This age group needs the most sleep, about 14 hours per day on average. Now that's what I call a power nap!
Babies & young children
Stage of sleep where dreaming occurs
REM
One of the key aspects of consciousness, this is our level of wakefulness & alertness
Arousal
One consequence of selective attention: This happens when we're so focused on one thing, that we miss seeing something unexpected right in front of our eyes
Inattention Blindness
The part of the iceberg that's just under the water's surface, this contains all of the thoughts, memories, & emotions we aren't thinking about currently, but can be retrieved quickly as soon as they're needed
Preconsciousness
This age group needs the least amount of sleep, only about 7 hours a day. I feel tired already
Older adults
Problem Solving
One of the key aspects of consciousness, this is our ability to recognize what's going on around us
Awareness
One consequence of selective attention: This happens when we're so focused on something that we either miss or take a long time to notice large scale changes in a visual stimulus.
This shows how little we actually perceive from our environment - we even miss a croissant turning into a pancake right in front of our eyes!
Change Blindness
The bottom of the iceberg, this is where memories we can no longer access reside alongside our instincts (gut feelings), desires, etc.
Dynamic Unconscious
This benefit of sleep happens during Stage 2, I'm glad I remembered that!
Learning & Memory Consolidation
This theory of why we dream says that dreams occur as a replay of our day, kind of like a "recap" on a TV show. This theory is rooted in sleep as a crucial component of learning
Sorting Recent Experiences
Perspective of psychology that emphasizes broad principles focused on overt observable behaviors & how they change in response to different stimuli
Behaviorism
The state achieved by some tasks & forms of processing in which tasks can be performed with little or no attention. Also known as "mental reflexes"
Automaticity
The background apps that support everyday functioning without our conscious awareness or control
Cognitive Unconscious
This benefit of sleep happens during Stage 3, I feel so much better!
Growth, Healing, & Immune Support
The hypothesis that dreams are a result of the brain’s attempt to organize chaotic patterns of brain activity during sleep into a semi coherent narrative
Activation Synthesis Hypothesis
Early method of studying consciousness, this process emphasizes examining one's own internal thoughts & feelings....now that's some scary stuff
Introspection
An example of automaticity, interference on the Stroop task occurs when we can't help but do this early acquired skill before naming the ink color
Reading
The person who somehow created a somewhat decent way to conceptualize consciousness, despite his many, many shortcomings and general poor choices in everything else he came up with
Freud (ew)
This benefit of sleep comes about when we need to power down and keep some energy for later
Conserve Resources
This technology can help us measure brain activity and determine conscious from unconscious states, plus you get to wear a really cool hat!
Electroencephalography (EEG)
