Matter is made up of tiny particles called
atoms
The chemical symbols Si represents which element?
Silicon
Which of the following is a COMPOUND: H2, H2O, O2 or N2?
H2O
Solids, liquids and gases are different __________of ___________.
States of Matter
Heat is the flow of______________.
thermal energy
True or False: Electrons are negative particles that move around outside of an atom's nucleus
True
As you move ACROSS the periodic table, does atomic number generally increase or decrease?
Increase
True or False: Compounds always have the same properties as the elements that make them up.
False
Least- Solld
Most- Gas
True or false: a phase change creates a different kind of matter
False- just a different state of matter
Name the 3 subatomic particles and identify each particle's charge
proton- +
neutron- neutral
Electron- -
Who is considered the "father" of or creator of the periodic table?

How many elements are found in KNO3?
Name them
three...Potassium, Nitrogen, and Oxygen
Which 2 states of matter are fluids?
Liquids and Gases
Which two phase changes skip the liquid phase?
Sublimation and deposition
How many protons are found in atom of Selenium(Se)?

Which two types of thermal energy transfer do NOT require direct contact?
Convection and Radiation
A scientist claims to have discovered an atom with 79 protons. Could this be true? Explain
Yes! Gold has an atomic number of 79 which indicates that it has 79 protons
32
Ge
72.63
Name the element. How many protons and electrons does it have?
Germanium
32 protons and 32 electrons
Name all the elements in Na2SO4. How many of each element are there?
Sodium-2
Sulphur -1
Oxygen-4
A friend says that air must be a liquid because it can flow...is your friend correct? Explain
They are incorrect because liquids and gases both flow. Air particles have broken completely free of each other and can move freely while liquids cannot. The shape of a liquid cannot completly fill a container but a gas can therefore, air must be a gas.
During a phase change, what is happening in times whe the thermal energy is NOT causing the temperature to rise (ex: in a phase change graph on the flat portions)
The attractive forces of the particles is being overcome causing he attractive forces of the particles to break apart during the times when the temperature is not rising.
