What is the name of this WHMIS symbol

Skull and Cross Bones

100

What are the three states of matter

Solid, Liquid, Gas

100

Define a physical Property, and give one example.

The properties that can be observed without the change of the substance

Color & Appearance: What you see, such as the silver-grey look of iron or the reddish-brown tint of copper.

  • State of Matter: Whether a substance is a solid, liquid, gas, or plasma at a given temperature.

  • Melting & Boiling Points:

  • Density: How much mass is packed into a specific volume
  • Hardness: How resistant a solid material is to permanent shape change or scratching (e.g., diamond is much harder than graphite).
  • Conductivity: How well a material allows heat or electricity to flow through it (e.g., copper conducts electricity well).
  • Malleability & Ductility: How easily a solid can be hammered into thin sheets (malleability) or drawn into wires (ductility).
  • Solubility:

  • Magnetism

What is the definition of a homogenous mixture

When we have two or more substances mixed together but they look like 1 substance

Define chemical properties and give me one example

These are properties that can only be seen through chemical reactions:

  • Flammability: The ability of a substance to burn or ignite in the presence of oxygen and a heat source.
  • Toxicity: The degree to which a chemical substance can damage or harm a living organism.

  • Reactivity: How readily a substance undergoes a chemical change when combined with other elements or compounds.

  • Oxidation / Corrosion: The tendency of a material (like metals) to lose electrons or react with oxygen and moisture to form oxides, such as rust.

  • Acidity and Basicity (pH): A measure of how acidic or basic a solution is based on hydrogen ion concentration.

  • Heat of Combustion: The amount of energy released when a substance undergoes complete combustion.

300

True or false?

Particles in a solid do not move

False

Particles are always moving

300

Elements and Compounds are classified as this type of substance

What is a pure substance

300

What is the elemental symbol for Aluminium

Al

300

What is a compound?

- Are compounds pure substances

when two elements bond together to form a compound

Yes they are pure substances

Carbon and Oxygen make CO2

What is the importance of the Consumer Product Symbols

These symbols are easier to understand.

400

what happens to the heat in a substance when it moves from a liquid to a solid?

The heat leaves the substance causing it to freeze

400

What is the pH of a solution after we mix an acid and base together?

around 7

How do we know when a solvent has reached its saturation point?

When no more solute can be dissolved

500

What is a chemical that you can find in your house? What is the danger of the chemical and what WHMIS symbol would you give it

Lots of different examples

500

When making icecream, why do we add salt to the ice mixture?

The salt lowers the freezing point of water. When the ice melts heat is transferred more rapidly from the cream mixture to the ice, giving us icecream

500

Jesse is certain that when water changes states it goes through chemical change. Are they right or wrong? How would you explain the right answer?

Jesse is incorrect, the properties of water never change, the particles are always water, changing states only changes how fast they move and how far apart they become.

500

What do the Subscript numbers tell us in a chemical compound

How many atoms of that element we have
