I am an invisible flow of tiny charged particles called electrons moving through a wire.

I am Electricity

Copper is a good __________ of electricity.

Conductor

100

There is a long wire that brings electricity directly from a power plant to our homes.

False.

Electricity goes through powerlines to a substation and then to our homes.

100

A complete, unbroken path through which electric current can flow is called a __________.

Circuit.

100

What part of a circuit is this object?

Energy source or Battery

200

I am a large industrial facility where energy is generated from sources like coal, natural gas, nuclear reactions, wind, or flowing water. I create the massive amounts of current that feed into the electrical grid

What am I?

Rubber does not allow the flow of electricity because it is an ___________ material.

insulating

200

Electricity is pulled out of the ground at power plants.

False.
Electricity is generated using different fuel sources.

200

A circuit with a break or gap in the pathway that stops the flow of current is known as a(n) __________.

Broken Circuit or Open Circuit.

I carry high-voltage electrical current across long distances from one city or region to another.

I am power line or transmission line

300

A complete loop through which an electrical current travels.

Closed circuit

300

A battery acts as a power source that provides the electrical pressure, or voltage, needed to push current through a circuit.

 True

What can make electrons in a circuit flow or stop?

Switch

400

I am a secure fenced-in yard filled with large transformers, switches, and equipment. My job is to step up or step down voltage levels so electricity can travel safely from long-distance lines into local neighborhoods.

Substation

400

What types of charges attract ?

Unlike charges.

400

When a switch is in the "open" position, it creates a complete pathway that allows electricity to flow continuously

False.. an open circuit is a broken circuit.

How many volts of electricity comes through a typical wall outlet in your home?

220V - 240V

500

I am a sudden, brief, and dangerous spike in electrical voltage that can happen during a lightning strike or when heavy appliances turn on. If homes lack protection, I can fry sensitive electronics

I am Surge of Electricity.

Wires are made of conductive material so electricity can flow through them; however they are covered with an insulating material, so we don't feel the shock.

True.

When a switch is turned on and the pathway is completely connected, allowing current to flow, it is called a __________.

A.

Closed circuit

Why do long-distance high-tension power lines typically use very high voltages rather than high currents to transport electricity across the country?

If you try to jam a massive amount of water (high current) through a regular pipe, it creates a lot of friction. In electrical wires, high current creates massive electrical friction, which turns valuable electricity into wasted heat that radiates into the air.

To avoid this waste, power companies do a clever trick: they use a substation to turn the "pressure" (voltage) way up and turn the "amount" (current) way down. This allows the same total amount of power to glide through the long-distance lines effortlessly with almost no friction or heat loss. Once the electricity safely reaches your town, another substation lowers the voltage back down so it is safe to use in your home.
