Climate
Average weather measured over a large period of time
Taste and odour
Turbidity (cloudiness) and colour
pH (how acidic or basic the water is)
Dissolved oxygen
Solids, including floating materials
What's erosion
Eroding of something by wind or water or any natural agents
How many zones of a lake are there
3
What are the 3 major uses of water
Agriculture
Industry
Domestic
Sediments
Eroded rock fragments and soil carried by water or wind.
what is water quality?
Water quality means the measure of the amount of substances besides water in a water sample; description of how pure a water sample is. Water quality is measured by its salinity.
Waves and tides are created how?
Most waves that exist are caused by wind
Tides are created by the moon’s gravitational pull on the earth.
how many zones of the ocean are there
4
What are the percentages
Agriculture- 73%, Industry- 22%, Domestic- 5%
Population
Group of organisms of the same species that live in a particular area.
Escherichia is also called
E. coli
What are two glaciers
Moraines form from rocks and gravel that build up along the sides and at the end of the glacier. As the edges of the glacier melt, large deposits form.
Drumlins are small hills with a distinctive teardrop shape. They form when a glacier moves over moraines that had formed earlier. The tip of the drumline points in the direction that the glacier was moving.
Expand on the lake zones
The three zones of the lake are:
Upper zone
Shore to down where aquatic plants stop growing.
Plants there are: bulrushes and water lilies.
Animals there are: small fish, clams, insects, snails, worms, leeches and frogs.
Middle zone
Open water area that still has light penetration
Food for fish their are Phytoplankton
The fish there move from the middle zone to the darker, deepest water.
Lowest zone
Deepest and darkest part of the lake.
Has no light penetration which means no plants grow here.
Food for animals living there comes from floating down waste from the plants and animals that live on the surface.
What are 3 technologies that effect water quality
Three technologies that affect water quality are:
Power Stations- sometimes discharge warm water into lakes or rivers that can kill some animals and encourage excessive
plant growth.
Oil spills- from ships can harm animals in, on, and near the water.
Habitat Destruction- takes away the places that animals can live and plants can grow.
Distillation
Technique for separating solutions that involves boiling and condensation
What is salinity
The amount of salt dissolved in a give amount of water
What's a river profile?
What the river is made up of
What zone is the deepest part of the ocean
The oceanic zone
Why should we monitor our water
We should monitor water quality so animals or plants don’t die off. We also drink the water from lakes, so we don’t want to drink toxic water.
Reverse Osmosis
Movement of water through a membrane from an area of lower water concentration too one of higher water concentration; technique used for purifying water
what's the worst that can happen if you drink toxic water
Death Or Serious Sickness
What are two features in the ocean
A Volcanic Island is a feature found on the ocean floor; it is a volcano that grows up from the ocean floor to above water. Trenches are another feature in the ocean where two plates are moving towards each other. The thinner plate is pushed down below the thicker continental plate.
