•Use syringe designed for ear irrigation (Best for pt to use right angle syringe (has elbow in tip))
•Irrigating in shower is easy and less mess
•Always use tap water that feels barely warm to you (colder/warmer can cause vertigo)
•If cerumen thick/sticky, may need to place eardrops to soften wax first (or baby oil or mineral oil) approx 1 hr before irrigation
•Fill syringe with lukewarm tap water
•Aim toward the top of ear canal
•Hold head at 30 degree angle to side irrigating
•Use one hand to hold syringe and other to push plunger
•Apply gentle but firm, continuous pressure – allowing water to flow against top of canal
•Do NOT use “blasts” of pressure
•Water should flow out, bringing earwax/debris with it
•Should NOT be painful; can decrease pressure, but if still persists, stop irrigation
•Continue irrigation till at least 1 cup of solution has wasted into and out of ear.
•Hold head at 90 degree angle to allow remaining water to drain from ear
•Repeat on other ear
•Irrigate weekly to monthly depending on how your earwax collects
