Explain how the motion of particles differs in gases, liquids, and solids.
Gas particles are spread far apart, and they move in all directions at high speeds, filling all the space available to them. Liquid particles are packed closely together, but they can move freely around one another. As a result, a liquid can take on the shape of its container. Solid particles are packed tightly together; they can vibrate but not move from their fixed positions.
