Who founded Maryland?
The Calvert family had permission from King Charles II to found the colony. George Calvert was called Lord Baltimore, so was his son, Celsius Calvert.

What is the difference between a planter and an overseer?
A planter is a plantation owner. The overseer is hired to watch over enslaved people. The overseer made sure slaves did their work and did not run away.

Who were indentured servants?
Indentured servants were young people from England that could not afford the voyage to the colonies, usually the Maryland colony. The voyage was paid for by someone already in the colony. The indentured servant had to work as a slave for this person for a number of years to pay off the cost of the voyage. The government gave indentured servants land, clothes, tools, and corn after their years of enslavement.

Who founded the Georgia colony, and why?

The colonists took much of the Tuscarora Native Americans’ land. The Tuscarora attacked the colonists, hoping the attacks would scare the colonists. Instead, the attacks were the beginning of the Tuscarora War.

Some free African Americans in Spanish Florida started small towns, such as Fort Mose. In 1738, it became the first settlement for free Africans. They were free to practice African customs.
