Two teams of 7 players each play on a rectangular court, divided into two halves.

Teams take turns sending a raider to the opposing side. The raider must chant "kabaddi" without taking a breath.

Raiders score a point for every defender tagged and successfully returning to their own half. A "bonus point" is awarded for crossing the bonus line.

Defenders score a point if they stop the raider from returning to their side.
