The goal of the game is for a batsman to protect his two wickets, a set of three upright sticks, called stumps. A ball is thrown at the wickets by a bowler on the opposing team, and the batsman wields a flat bat which he uses to strike the ball away from the wickets. When the ball is struck, the batsman runs between his wickets and the wickets of the opposing team to score a run. While running, the batsman may be struck out if the ball knocks down his wickets or if his hit is caught. The game is measured in innings, and may last from minutes to days.
