What is Starfish?
Starfish is an early alert system platform that helps us provide timely intervention for students. It connects students with campus resources they may need, such as Disability Services, Holistic Support, Financial Aid, Academic Advising, and many other support departments.

Who can make referrals?
Any staff or faculty.
Are progress surveys required for all faculty to perform?
Yes!!!! Your division chair will know who hasn't completed them. The Dean of Student Services will know, the Dean of Instruction will know, everyone will know. So please complete the surveys.
What is the difference between system raised tracking items and manually raised tracking items?
System raised tracking items are raised by rules the tenant admin has established, manually raised tracking items are raised by staff and faculty due to a concern or for a kudos.

If a student has been overheard discussing their difficulty making rent this month or is struggling to buy groceries, who should they be referred to?
Holistic support under the basic needs referral option.
What action do you perform if you do not need to raise an action item during a survey?
Still open the survey and submit it without checking any boxes, it will still count as a completed survey. If later on you need to raise a flag, do so manually.

What should you do if you don't know what flag to raise?
Ask Division Chair, Ask Starfish Manager, Click on the reference "i" button that is right next to the flag box, refer to this training, any of the above.

When can you give a student a tracking item?
No not only during a survey, you can manually do it any time.
What is a flag worker?
A person designated by the appropriate department to work the flag that has been assigned to a student. Can be from FA, ECHS, DC, Holistic Support, Career Services.
What should you do if you think you need to make a referral but aren't sure who it should be sent to?
Ask division chair, ask starfish manager, ask dean of student services, refer to training, etc.
Two options for searching a student, either filter by "connection" or search for the student in the top right corner. Click on students name and then choose which tracking item you would like to give the student, then fill out applicable information.
How can a student raise their own flag?
Login into Starfish from Canvas, click on the hamburger menu in the top left, go down to the option that says "Request Help", and fill in the prompts that are displayed.
What is the lifecycle of a flag? (Hint: There are two ways a flag is resolved.)
Flag raised, assigned, worker contacts student successfully or unsuccessfully, if unsuccessful try again within 72 hours, and sends result back to instructor and flag is resolved.
If successful contact, make a success plan with student, do additional referrals as needed, send back to instructor, resolved.

Academic advising, academic coaching, admissions, financial aid, counseling, OARs, Career services, TRIO (in progress), AH Tutoring and Health skills lab
List two things that should not be included in comments and two things that should be in the comments when raising a tracking item.
DO NOT ENTER THE STUDENT'S NAME! Do not include personal judgements, personal notes about behavior such as having a learning disability etc., do not highlight the students struggling in other classes, no private personal information such as they are getting a divorce, and last but not least DO NOT ENTER THE STUDENT'S NAME IN THE COMMENTS!!!!!!!!!!
Do list relevant notes, facilitate a relationship, help with future interactions. Examples: Suggested student meet with tutoring center and sent a referral, commended student for efforts, student will make an appointment after mid-term exam, etc.
