What is a "hypothesis"?

*Bonus point if you can tell me how it's specifically written*

An educated guess about how things work

*Using an "If..., then..." statement

1

Definition: A transparent (clear), tasteless, odorless liquid

Water

1

What are the 4 states of matter?

Solid, Liquid, Gas, & Plasma

1

What are the 4 steps in the Water Cycle?

*Bonus point if said in order*

1. Evaporation

2. Condensation

3. Precipitation

4. Collection & Runoff

1

What is "filtration"?

Method to separate a solid from a liquid or gas using a porous (tiny holes) barrier

2

When researching, a paper that has written information that gives personal research evidence is known as what?

Source

2

What is the difference between ADhesion and COhesion?

ADhesion - two DIFFERENT materials stick together

COhesion - the SAME material sticks together

2

DEDUCTIVE REASONING:

Mercury is a special heavy metal used in thermometers. At room temperature, what state of matter is it?

Liquid

2

Definition: When water falls down to Earth from the atmosphere

Precipitation

2

During the DIY Water Filter Experiment, we used river stones, gravel, sand, cotton balls, and coffee filters to filter out the _____ from the water.

Impurities

3

In the Water Cycle in a Bag Experiment, we checked-in on the experiment by writing and drawing what happened to the water at different times.

What do you call the information and measurements collected during an experiment?

Data

3

Definition: How tightly packed matter is inside a certain space

Example: luggage or backpack

Density

3

Give an example of each state of matter. (4 total)

Solid - ice, desk, coin, etc.

Liquid - water, oil, paint, etc.

Gas - air, water vapor, helium, etc.

Plasma - Sun, lightning, aurora, etc.

3

What is the definition of "evaporation"?

When liquid turns into gas by heating up

3

When making tea, the warm water that passed through the tea bag's filter and became tea is known as what?

Hint: the fluid that passed through the filter

Filtrate

4

The one factor you change in an experiment is called what?

Example: The Sink or Float Experiment used many different items to test in a tub of water.

Independent Variable

4

Bubbles are an example of which property of water?

Hint: "invisible skin"

Surface Tension

4

The definition of a "gas" is a phase where a group of atoms have...?

Hint: 3 traits

1. No definite shape

2. No definite size

3. Expands freely

4

Give an example of "condensation".

Clouds, morning dew, water on the outside of a cold cup/glass, etc.

4

Activated charcoal is superheated charcoal that traps tiny impurities and toxins by _____ (sticks to surface)

Hint: ADhesion

*Bonus point if you can tell me what activated charcoal is commonly used for*

Adsorption

*Medicine

5

What are the 6 steps in the Scientific Method?

*Bonus point if said in order*

1. Observation

2. Research

3. Hypothesis

4. Experiment

5. Analyze

6. Communicate

5

During the Walking Water Experiment, which property of water made the water "walk" from one cup to another?

*Bonus point if you can explain how it worked*

Capillary Action

*Liquid flowed upward through the pores in the paper towel

5

Plasma is a phase where gas is _______ (electrified) or superheated.

Ionized

5

Explain what happens in the water cycle in terms of weather.

Water evaporates into water vapor due to the heat of the sun and rises up into the atmosphere. The water vapor then cools and condenses with dust into a cloud. When the cloud becomes too heavy, the water then precipitates and rains down. The rainwater then either gathers into a body of water or goes into the ground (collection & runoff).

5

MEMORIZATION

What are the 4 Types of Water Resources?

Hint: large bodies of water are labeled these

1. Freshwater

2. Saltwater

3. Groundwater

4. Wastewater
