Why do historians study maps?

• They show how the world changed: By comparing an old map to a new map, historians can see how cities grew, how borders moved after wars, and how old roads turned into major highways.
• They reveal what people knew: Hundreds of years ago, people didn’t have satellites or airplanes. Old maps show us what parts of the world people had explored and what parts were still a mystery to them.
• They show what was important: If an old map draws a kingdom's castle really big, but leaves out smaller villages, it tells historians that the mapmaker cared most about power and wealth.
• They solve mysteries: Sometimes, a place that exists today has a completely different name on an old map. Maps help historians figure out who lived there first and what language they spoke.
