When the University expanded into lower campus after the 1909 world's fair, the pool became part of a hazing ritual of upperclassmen dunking freshmen. That led to students calling it “Frosh Pond.” In 1961, UW Regent Joseph Drumheller donated the funds to turn the pool into a fountain and the landmark was renamed in his honor. Many student groups have traditions tied to the pond. Forestry, for example, held an annual log-rolling contest.
