Where did the name of this shopping day come from? (Three possible answers - name one!)
1. The phrase became more popular in the mid-1970s as police, bus drivers and cabdrivers use it in reference to the headaches all the shoppers jaywalking and crowding the sidewalks caused them. 2. The masses of shoppers reminded people of the original "Black Friday" (which was actually 'Black Tuesday') when the stock market crashed. 3. According to the NRF, the term “Black Friday” comes from the retail accounting perspective; it is said to refer to the stores’ profit margins in the days when the books were kept by hand with red ink signaling loss and black ink representing profit. As one of the most major shopping days of the year, “Black Friday” sales can push retailers’ finances from the “red” into the “black.”

Over the years, many balloons have floated off from the parade, each with a return address written on them. What happened if someone returned the balloon to a Macy’s store?
They would win a prize of $100. In 1931 aviator Clarence Chamberlain was flying over NYC and lassoed the Jerry Pig Balloon in midair in an effort to collect the reward money. In 1932, in a similar attempt to catch a cat balloon, an airplane flown by a novice pilot became entangled in the balloon and almost crashed into Broadway
