The plan was for Jonas to act normal so no one becomes suspicious. On the day of the Ceremony, when everyone is celebrating, Jonas will take his bicycle and meet the giver on a car and then secretly ride out of the community towards Elsewhere. The Giver will stay behind instead of escaping. His job will be to help the people cope with the memories that return once Jonas is gone and help the community through the confusion and change.
