narrator- Jonas and Gabriel have left the Community in search of a true life with choices and feelings, and to also give that same life to the members of the Community. However, Jonas feels that perhaps he has gotten in over his head and fears that he will not be able to save himself and protect Gabriel. He is having second thoughts about his decision to leave, as it has brought him great suffering.
