Ponyboy thinks Socs have it made and don't have any problems at all because they are wealthy and liked. Cherry teaches him, "things are rough all over," and Randy shows him that just because the Socs have money doesn't mean they are happy or loved by their parents.

Johnny decides he will return to town and turn himself into the police. He thinks this is a good idea because he believes Cherry will testify that the Socs started the violence and Bob's killing was in self defense. He also doesn't want to keep running and feels bad for Ponyboy's brothers.
