In front of the laboratory there were papers being left with orders and complaints, and Poole has been sent flying to all the wholesale chemists in town. Every time he brought the stuff back, there would be another paper telling him to return it, because it was not pure, and another to a different firm.
This one was from a letter to Messrs. Maw, with a complaint saying Dr. Jekyll used to buy from them, but now it was not of the same quality. By the end, it was written "For God's sake", which was a bit odd based on the formality of the letter as whole.
"... but my instinct and all the circumstances of my nameless situation tell me that the end is sure and must be early."
