Beliefs or practices that claim to be scientific but lack evidence or cannot be tested reliably.
What is pseudoscience?
What are the hydrosphere, biosphere, geosphere, and atmosphere?
The two most common elements created during the Big Bang.
What are Hydrogen and Helium?
The apparent change in the wavelength or frequency of the energy emitted by a moving object is called...
The Doppler Effect!
Incorrect views or opinions based on faulty understanding or interpretation of facts.
What are misconceptions?
Multiple parts working together toward a common goal or function.
What is a system?
The estimated age of the universe
What is 14 billion years old?
When waves approach an object, they are-----
Compressed. Also accepted, high-pitched or blue/violet
A well-substantiated explanation of the natural world, based on a body of evidence and repeatedly tested.
What is a theory?
One of the following is not a system: hydrosphere, solar system, circulatory system, car, piece of paper.
What is a piece of paper?
Place the following in the correct order:
-Atoms, Stars, Big Bang, Galaxies
Big Bang, atoms, stars, galaxies
When celestial objects like stars are moving away from Earth, their waves are (describe length/size and color)-----
Why is the Big Bang a theory?
Because it is a well-tested explanation based on evidence.
Describe an example of interactions between the hydrosphere and atmosphere?
Precipitation, geyser, answers may vary
List at least two pieces of evidence for the Big Bang.
Cosmic Background Radiation, Redshift, Expansion of universe, Abundance of H and He
Arrange the following by size from smallest to largest:
Star, Galaxy, Moon, Solar System, Universe
Moon, Star, Solar System, Galaxy, Universe
List an example of pseudoscience, and an example of a misconception.
Pseudoscience: Astrology, Flat Earth, etc.
Misconceptions: Believing blood is blue, believing diamonds and coal are made through the same process, etc.
Describe an example of interactions between the geosphere and hydrosphere.
Answers vary: landslide, beach/shore, geyser, natural lake or pond, erosion of land, water soaking into the ground-groundwater, rivers shaping the land beneath it
Describe the Big Bang from inflation to the creation of galaxies.
The universe started small as a hot, dense singularity. Then inflation happened, which was a hot and rapid expansion of energy, beginning the creation of space and time as we know it. From there, neutrons and protons were created, eventually gaining electrons, and forming atoms. These atoms were primarily H and He, and clumped together to make stars. More clumps of gas and stars clumped together to make galaxies.
Why do scientists use special units of measure to talk about space? What are two of those units we have discussed?
Because distances are too vast to measure with typical measurement units. The two are lightyears(ly) and astronomical units (AU).
