How many steps are in the Scientific Method?
6
When do you use a bar graph in science?
When you are using categorical data, comparing things in multiple groups
What is a hypothesis?
An educated guess
What are the two types of observations?
Qualitative and Quantitative
Which variable does the scientist change?
Asking a question
A scientist collected data measuring the temperature of his house throughout the day. What type of graph should he make?
Line graph
What is the correct format to write a hypothesis?
If, then, because
What is a qualitative observation?
Something you observe, involving your five senses
Which variable changes based on what the scientist changes?
Dependent variable
Creating a graph would be an example of what part of the scientific method?
Analyzing the data
What type of graph should you use when comparing parts to a whole?
Pie chart
Write a hypothesis for the following problem/question:
Does the type of music you listen to affect how fast you run a mile?
If you listen to rock music then you will run faster because it will make you more motivated.
What is a quantitative observation, and give an example
An observation involving measurement (numbers), someone's height
What is the difference between the control and constant variables?
Control is what you compare your data to, and the constant variables is what you keep the same throughout the entire experiment
What are the steps of the scientific method IN ORDER
Ask a question, write a hypothesis, experiment, analyze, draw a conclusion, communicate the results
Which variable goes on each of the axes?
X axis: IV
Y axis: DV
Write a hypothesis for the following question.
When is the best time to go to the grocery store to avoid lines?
If you go to the grocery store at 3 pm then you will have shorter lines because less people will be at the store.
Is the following observation qualitative or quantitative?
While Joe was walking through his garden he noticed that the leaves on his tomato plants were looking a little bit wilted
Qualitative
Cora's brother thought that crushed ice would keep his soda cooler than whole ice cubes.
To test this idea, Cora divided a large bottle of soda equally among six glasses. Cora added five whole ice cubes to each of the first three glasses while her brother crushed five ice cubes into small pieces before adding them to each of the other three glasses. Ten minutes after all the ice had been added to the glasses, Cora used a thermometer to measure the temperature of the soda in each glass.
What is the independent variable in this situation?
The size of the ice pieces
What is a possible question that can be tested scientifically using the scientific method?
Answers will vary
Create a graph for the following set of data.
Type of Tree # Planted
Maple 62
Aspen 29
Birch 71
Pine 93
Ash 68
Check answer.
Come up with a testable question and then write a hypothesis that you can use to test this question.
Answers will vary.
List three qualitative and three quantitative observations about Miss Kallach's classroom.

Chad liked to hike, but he was often bothered by mosquito bites. He read that rubbing lavender flowers on your skin can repel mosquitoes. Chad wanted to find out if lavender flowers work better as a mosquito repellent than store-bought bug spray. So, he sprayed bug spray on one of his arms and rubbed lavender flowers on his other arm. Then, he went for a hike.
When he got home, he counted the number of new mosquito bites on each arm. Chad repeated this test each afternoon for one week.
Identify the independent and dependent variables.
Independent: type of mosquito repellent used
Dependent: Number of mosquito bites
