In Matthew 21:28-31, Jesus tells a short story about a father and his two sons:

A father went to his first son and said, "Son, go and work today in the vineyard." The son answered, "I will not," but later he changed his mind and went.

The father then went to the second son and said the same thing. This son answered, "I will, sir," but he did not go.

Jesus then asked his listeners, "Which of the two did what his father wanted?" They replied, "The first."

Explain this story in a moral lens

Actions speak louder than words, God values genuine obedience over polite but empty promises. It is a warning against hypocrisy, saying the "right" religious things without following through in our behaviour.

The first son made a mistake by being disrespectful and rebellious at first. However, the moral lesson highlights that it is never too late to change your mind and do the right thing. Your past choices do not prevent you from choosing obedience today.

As the Israelites traveled through the harsh desert, they grew impatient and grumbled against God and Moses, complaining about the lack of food and water. In response to their rebellion, poisonous snakes entered the camp, and many people were bitten and died.

Realizing their sin, the people begged Moses to pray for them. God instructed Moses: "Make a snake and put it up on a pole; anyone who is bitten can look at it and live." Moses made a bronze snake and put it on a pole. Whenever anyone was bitten by a snake and looked at the bronze snake, they lived.

Look at this story through an Allegorical lens.

The people are physically dying from the toxic venom of deadly snakes. The Poison of Sin: Humanity is spiritually dying from the "venom" of sin, introduced by Satan (the serpent in Eden).

The bronze snake (the image of the very thing destroying them) is lifted up on a wooden pole. Jesus is lifted up on a wooden cross taking on the exact likeness of sinful flesh to destroy sin.

The dying Israelites could not cure themselves; they simply had to look at the bronze snake to be saved. Dying sinners cannot save themselves through works; they must simply look to Jesus on the cross in faith to receive eternal life. (salvation is a gift received entirely through faith in Jesus Christ)
