After administration in a New Jersey high school was tipped off by another student, Thomas Best’s car was searched on school grounds.  The tip claimed that Best gave pills to one of his friends.  Before the search, the assistant principal refused to call Best’s father.  During the search by two assistant principals, the car was found to contain a liquid-filled syringe, a fake cigarette that could be used as a pipe, a wallet, a bottle of pills belonging to Rose Foster, a bag of marijuana, a bag containing white powder, and a vial. Because of items found in the car, Thomas Best was arrested and admitted that the items belonged to him. The question that was brought to the Supreme Court of New Jersey was whether school administrators could search a car on school grounds using the reasonable suspicion standard.
