Groundwater

Groundwater is the water that hides deep beneath our feet, filling up the tiny cracks and spaces in the soil and rocks like a giant, underground sponge.

100

How do puddles disappear off the sidewalk?

Water evaporates and condenses in the air in the form of clouds or water mist.

100

If the ocean stays the same temperature, but the air above the ocean changes to become very cold, what do you predict will most likely happen to the water in the ocean?

It would probably rain more because there will be more condensation.

100

Herbivore

Animal that eats plants

100

How can you save water while brushing your teeth?

Turn the faucet off while you're brushing.

200

Evaporation

Evaporation is when liquid water warms up and turns into an invisible gas that floats away into the air.

200

The Earth can be thought of as four systems (land, air, water, and living things). Two of these systems interacting caused the puddles to disappear. List which two systems you think they are.

Water and Air

200

Where can you find fresh water one earth? (name at least 3)

Lakes, rivers, ponds, groundwater, streams, wetlands

200

onmivore

Animal that eats both plants and animals.

200

How can you save water on your showers?

Take shorter showers (less than 6 or 7 minutes)

300

Condensation

Condensation is when invisible gas in the air gets cold and turns back into tiny liquid water droplets, like the "sweat" that forms on the outside of a cold soda can.

300

How does water and air cause puddles to disappear off the sidewalk?

The Sun shines and heats up the air. The warm air interacts with the water and the water evaporates into the air.

300

How much of earths water is fresh water?

3%

300

carnivore

Meat eater animal.

300

How can you reuse your water?

Use your left over drinking water to water plants or give it to pets.

400

Precipitation

Precipitation is any form of water—like rain, snow, or hail—that gets too heavy to stay in the clouds and falls down to the ground.

400

How does ground water help in areas with lots of droughts?

Ground water acts like a hidden underground savings account for water; when it hasn't rained for a long time, people can pump that stored water out of the ground to keep crops growing and thirst quenched until the rain returns.

400

Describe why it’s important to protect the Earth’s fresh water resources.

It’s important to protect the Earth’s fresh water because there is so little of it. Humans need fresh water for drinking and bathing. Only 1 percent of water on Earth is fresh water that we can use. Because there is so little of this resource on Earth, it’s very important to protect it.

400

Predator

Animal that hunts and kills other animals.

400

How can you save water while watering plants?

Water plants early in the morning or late in the evening after it's cooled off and the sun has gone down.

500

Wetlands

Wetlands are special areas of land, like marshes or swamps, that are covered by shallow water for most of the year and act like a giant sponge to help clean the environment.

500

If you lived in an area with a lot of drought, would you plant plants with deep roots or shallow roots? Why?

Deep roots so that the roots can grown down and reach the ground water table.

500

How much of earths water is accessible fresh water?

1%

500

Prey

Animal that is hunted and killed by other animals.

500

How can you save water while doing laundry or doing dishes (assuming you have a dishwasher)?

Wait until you have a full load to run the dishwasher or washing machine.
