What were the main causes of the Spanish and American War?

The Spanish-American War (1898) was primarily caused by Cuba's struggle for independence from Spain, which began in 1895, and the U.S. desire to protect its economic interests. The conflict was inflamed by "yellow journalism" (sensationalized media) and the mysterious explosion of the U.S. battleship Maine in Havana.

Why did the German's decide to conduct "unrestricted submarine warfare"

Following the 'Sussex Agreement', the Germans had to come to the surface, and then announce to merchant ships their intention. Many merchant ships were actually armed, and used their weapons to sink the submarines (uBoats). Germany grew tired of this self defeating strategy, and announced that all ships that violated the blockade of Great Britain would be sunk without warning.

What is nativism, How did it's effect play out after World War I?


Nativism is the belief that only those Americans who had been part of the original wave of colonization and settlement were true American's. World War I deepened these feelings and cause new hatred towards later immigrant groups including Germans, Catholics, and immigrants who were considered radicals who believed in anarchy, socialism, or communism.

A possession is when another country becomes part of the US, either as a state or a territory. A sphere of influence is a region which another country claims certain exclusive rights.

What were the outcomes of the Spanish and American War?

The 1898 Spanish-American War resulted in a decisive U.S. victory, ending Spain's colonial empire in the Western Hemisphere and establishing the United States as a global power. Via the Treaty of Paris, Spain relinquished claims on Cuba and ceded Guam, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines to the U.S. for $20 million.

What was the Zimmerman Telegram and who was involved in it? 

This was an encoded telegraph message sent from Arthure Zimmerman, the German foreign minister to the country of Mexico. The message offered Mexico a deal to join Germany by attacking the USA from the South in exchange for post war promised to return to Mexico all the land it had given up to America in the Mexican American War.

What is a bond, and why did the US encourage citizens to buy them during World War I

A bond is a certificate of debt, that can be sold by a private corportation or a municipal government (city, county, state, or nation). The bond holder is promised to recieve their initial investment back, plus a rate of interest at the end of the bond's maturity (1,3,5, or 10 years). The Government sold bonds under the "Liberty Loan" program to help fund the war, using American propagands to encourage patriotism in buying bonds.

How did the roles of women change during World War I?

With so many men conscripted (drafted), women took on many roles that had been traditionally set aside for me. This included factory work and paternal roles in the household. Women also worked in combat support roles including nursing, switchboard operators (Hello girls) and military intelligence. Women also led efforts to grow food at home in victory gardens and in rationing food and other supplies.

The Great Migration was a relocation of African American men who had been living in the rural south to northern manufacturing centers like Detroit, Columbus, Chicago, New York, and Buffalo where a shortage of labor exisitng for manufacturing that supported WWI.

What was the scopes trial? How did it represent modernism vs. traditionalism. 

The trail involved the State of Tennessee suing a teacher, Mr. Scopes, for teaching the theory of evolution in his class, against state law. The state won, but the case was overturned on appeal 2 years later. This was seen as a national referendum on modern ideas versus traditional values.
