Who were the Puritans? Describe what they were like and what they believed.

Puritans were very religious Christians and they had a strict interpretation of the Bible. They believed that anything enjoyable was sinful, that all members of the community should be required to attend church regularly to prove they were true Christians, and they believed that anything "bad" that happened to them (i.e. a failed crop or sick child) was the result of God punishing them for some "evil" going on in the town.

This created a lot of suspicion around others; also, many believed in literal witches and witchraft.

What is Abigail's motivation for faking "possession" by witchcraft? What are the other girls' motivations?

Abigail wants to accuse John Proctor's wife, Elizabeth, in order to have John Proctor all to herself.

The other girls don't want to get in trouble for dancing naked in the woods.

200

What "gift" does Mary Warren give to Elizabeth Proctor when Mary returns home from the trials?

a little poppet (doll); Abigail put a needle in its belly so that she could pretend that Elizabeth Proctor was "bewitching" her using the doll, but Abigail just  stabbed herself with a needle.

200

Why does Elizabeth Proctor lie when she is interviewed in court about why Abigail was fired?

She is trying to protect her husband from shame, but ironically her lie actually condemned him since he had just confessed.

Name ONE example of an allusion in To Kill a Mockingbird

(an allusion is a reference to something/someone from history, mythology, religion, or pop culture)

EX: historical allusion to President FDR with "nothing to fear but fear itself"

300

Does John Proctor consider himself a "good" man? Why or why not?

He does not consider himself a good man because he feels extreme guilt for having a physical affair with Abigail and betraying his wife. That decision led to his wife being charged of witchcraft and arrested.

300

Why does Scout cry when she sees Boo for the first time at the end of the novel?

She realizes that Boo is the one that saved Jem's life and her own life, and she cries (much like Jem did back when the tree hole was filled with cement) when she finally sees Boo Radley's humanity.

400

What is John Proctor's chief complaint about Reverend Parris's sermons?

They focus too much on hell and less on heaven; also, he preaches about money and Proctor believes that Reverend Parris lusts after money too much for a man of god (as evident from Parris's golden candlesticks at the church).

As Giles Corey is being tortured with heavy stones laid upon his chest as he's interviewed about witchcraft, why does he only say, "More weight" instead of denying the charges?

Because if he denies the charges of witchcraft or accepts them, his land will be forfeited and his children will not inherit anything. He does it for his children.

Explain the significance of this quote after Proctor's wife, Elizabeth, is arrested.

Proctor: "Is the accuser always holy now? Were they born this morning as clean as God's fingers? I'll tell you what's walking Salem--vengeance is walking Salem. We are what we always were in Salem, but now the little crazy children are jangling the keys of the kingdom and common vengeance writes the law!"

Proctor is calling out the real reason why people are being accused of witchcraft (for people to enact personal revenge on others), and he is pointing out the ridiculous nature of letting scheming girls run the town and decide who lives and dies.

What's the significance of Scout standing on the Radley front porch at the very end of the novel? What THEME does this relate to in the book?

It shows that she has finally been able to empathize with Boo Radley by imagining life from his perspective. This relates to the theme that Atticus has been repeating throughout the book: you never really know someone until you put yourself in their shoes.

500

Who is the FIRST person Abigail claims practiced witchcraft? Why does she blame this person in particular?

Tituba; Abigail blames Tituba because she is a convenient scapegoat. Tituba is a black slave and therefore has even less power in the town than Abigail, a young white girl, so the townspeople are likely to be prejudiced against Tituba and believe she was involved with "witchcraft."

500

What was Mr. Putnam's MAIN motivation of charging so many of his neighbors of witchcraft.

to be able to take their land

Arthur Miller, the author of The Crucible, wrote this play in the 1960s as a metaphor to condemn McCarthyism. Explain the connection between the Salem Witch Trials and the government's hunt for Communists at that time.

Like the witch trials, people were jailed without solid evidence and "told" on each other in order to enact vengeance or in order to save themselves from punishment. The craze spread like a virus, much like the witch trials.
