What is the difference between qualitative & quantitative data?
Qualitative: consists of attributes, labels, or often times non-numerical entries
Quantitative: consists of numerical measurements or counts
Example: telephone numbers in a directory
What is qualitative
This is the only level of measurement that cannot be put in order
What is nominal
Qualitative data categorized using names, labels or quanitites
What is nominal level of measurement
Example: Weights of infants at a hospital
What is quantitative
This is the only level of measurement that can be divided or multiplied
What is ratio
Qualitative or quantitative data that can be arranged in order
What is ordinal level of measurement
What is ordinal
You sample five gyms. One gym has 12 machines, one gym has 15 machines, one gym has ten machines, one gym has 22 machines, and the other gym has 20 machines. What type of data is this?
What is quantitative
always quantitive, the data can be ordered and you can calculate MEANINGFUL differences between data entries
What is the interval level of measurement
Example: Type of living accommodations
What is nomial
You sample the same five students. One student has a red backpack, two students have black backpacks, one student has a green backpack, and one student has a gray backpack. Is this qualitative or quantitative?
has all the properties of the interval level, with the added property that zero is inherent value. Therefore, you can put the data entries into a ratio
What is ratio level of measurement
Example: socioeconomic status
You sample the same 6 students. The weights (in pounds) of their backpacks are 6.2, 7, 6.8, 9.1, 4.3, 4.6. Notice that backpacks carrying three books can have different weights.
What is quantitative
