What role did religion play in the 13 colonies?

Massachusetts: Groups from England such as the Separatists (who became known as the Pilgrims) and Puritans, settled in Massachusetts because they were looking for religious tolerance. The Puritans governed Massachusetts and were not tolerant of other religions.

Pennsylvania: Pennsylvania was founded by a Quaker looking for religious freedom. However, people were able to follow any religion as they wished.

Maryland: Maryland was founded to help Catholics escape persecution in England. However, as Maryland welcomed Protestants as well as Catholics, Protestants outnumbered Catholics, creating conflict.

What were some of the major parts of the colonies’ economies?

The New England Colonies: The New England Colonies were more focused on fishing rather than farming. An example of this is Massachusetts, which had a big coastline and not very fertile soil, encouraging more fishing.

The Middle Colonies: The Middle Colonies were very focused on trade and small industries. An example of this is New York, as New York had natural ports and soil and weather good for farming, inspiring prospering trade. This led to a bigger population, which caused a greater diversity of people to come, including craftsmen who would want to start industries based on their craft.

The Southern Colonies: The Southern Colonies were very focused on agriculture and slave trade. An example of this is South Carolina, as they had very fertile soil and lived in low-lying areas, conditions perfect for farming. The crops that they chose to farm, such as rice, were very hard to cultivate, so they participated in the act of trading for slaves to work their large plantations.
