A type of ED characterized by a cycle of binge eating followed by compensatory behaviors to undo the effects of binge eating.
Define Orthorexia
A type of ED where an individual becomes consumed with only eating "proper or healthful foods"
Define ARFID
An ED where an individual limits the amount or type of food one eats, often related to texture, without underlying distress related to body image
What can happen with our bowel movements?
We can develop what is called gastoparesis "stomach paralysis". Normal digestion is not seen as vital so it stops. This can make us constipated.
How does our body temperature regulation change?
-Peach fuzz grows all over body to ensure insulation
-Extremities become cool and reddish blue
-Body does not allow itself to shiver
-Our body tries to conserve all energy related to temperature regulation
Why do we get labs every week during recovery?
Electrolytes and enzymes are one of the best ways to get a big picture of the state of our bodies. Potassium levels control heart rhythm/rate, sodium levels control brain function.
What is PICA?
An ED that consists of consuming items that are not typically thought of as food, without significant nutritional data.
What is Rumination disorder?
Regular regurgitation of food. When this happens, the individual is not under stress or discomfort. Often involuntary.
How are our skin/hair/nails affected?
-Wounds take longer to heal
-Skin bruises very easily
-Hair becomes thinner
-Nails become brittle

What are some coping mechanisms to use instead of purging/laxative/over exercise use?

What is OSFED?
Other specified feeding or eating disorder. Diagnosed when individuals do not fall into another category of ED perfectly. This does not mean it is any less severe/important to address.
Studies have shown that individuals with an eating disorders are more likely to develop or have coexisting substance use.
How does restriction affect blood glucose levels?
Lowers it. Extremely low BGL can result in cardiac death. We eat, our body digests and breaks down glucose, glucose is absorbed in our blood and distributed to our cells for ENERGY!
Most common health concerns related to BED.
-Diabetes
-Heart attacks
-Strokes
-Heart failure
Erodes the back of the teeth due to stomach acid which can cause teeth breakdown as well as chemical burns in the mouth.
Blood vessels can rupture in eyes due to increased pressure which can lead to vision loss and retinal detachment.
Sore throats, ear pain, and headaches are common.
Are genetics a factor in developing an ED?
Although genes alone do not predict who will develop an ED, genes and our environment do play an important role.
What does eating disorder recovery entail?
A mixture of confronting your ED with the help of psychological, medical, and nutritional help.
What is Cave Man brain?
A condition where your body does not feel it is safe or able enough to carry a child, producing pre-adolescent hormones. Fight or flight mode.
How common is BED?
BED is 3 times more common than anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa combined. BED is also more prevalent than breast cancer, schizophrenia, and HIV.

Who is most at risk for developing an ED?
Anyone! Throughout history, female born individuals are considered more likely to develop an ED but recent statistics report male born individuals are near just as likely.
