When we have a sufficient amount of client work to keep us busy, working on internal projects has a high opportunity cost because we could be billing clients for our time. Thus, bad internal projects are expensive.
Name one of the example bad internal projects from the Internal Projects SOP?
Biztools: a Django-based web-app built to help manage our time-tracking and invoicing. It took a significant amount of time to develop and maintain and was missing quite a few features that we would have liked it to have. Lost ~$30k because of it.
MAUDE Alerts: It cost approximately $70k to develop. Based on the number of email signups to-date, it appears to be useful to a small number of people.

We prefer shorter speedy messages in real-time chat because long paragraphs force the other person to wait while you type, and also make it hard for them to respond to specific points before you move on to something else.
