What is the purpose of the beat poetry movement? Why did they exist? What did they write about? What did they lay the foundation for? What defined them? (Give a overall explanation of the beat poets)
The purpose was to go against everything that was expected of them. They existed to push back against what they were told was normal. They wrote about everything; they did not censor themselves. They laid the foundation for the mass counter culture of the 1960s/1970s. Their writing was defined by lack of definition: no rhyme scheme, syllabic pattern, they were known for free verse.
