What 1945 invention revolutionized the preparation of food?
In 1954 the TV dinner hit the market. Why were they created and what did the meal contain?
The first TV dinners produced by Swanson were in answer to a problem they had with Thanksgiving turkey leftovers. An idea taken from packaged meals on Pan Am flights.
They packaged turkey, corn bread stuffing, peas and sweet potatoes and hung their advertising campaign on the newest craze to hit the nation: TV.
That year, Swanson sold more than 25 million TV dinners to hungry Americans, at 98 cents per package.
In the 40s and 50s, what was the most popular salad?
Jell-O Salad
During the 50's the women in charge of kitchens were faced with dueling expectations. Advancements in technology and conveniences. This gave middle-class homemakers more free hours in the day.
If women did have more time thanks to new technologies, they were still expected to fill it with household tasks. This led to convenience food products being used to make home-cooked meals that required more labor than opening a can. Jell-O salad was a perfect example. It took a processed food—powdered gelatin—and turned it into an elaborate-looking dish that showcased the cook’s domestic skills. The colorful molds were reminiscent of the traditional aspics served to presidents and monarchs, but this 20th-century version was much cheaper and easier to prepare.
Much like the gelatins of the past, Jell-O salads in the 1950s were works of art. The recipes were all about presentation, and taste was arguably an afterthought.
