True or False : Colder temperatures in winter are due to the Earth being farther away from the Sun.

False

100

What motion of the moon around the Earth is responsible for the moon phases we see?

Revolution/Orbit

100

True or False: Earth experiences three types of tides: high, medium, and low.

False

100

True or false:  The two types of eclipses are solar and celestial.

False

Follow-up: What are the two?

100

What force keeps the moon in orbit with Earth, and Earth in orbit with the Sun?

Gravity

Seasons are caused by two things, what are they?

1. The rotation of the Earth around the Sun.

2. The tilt of the Earth on its axis.

200

What is the positioning of the Earth, Moon, and Sun during a New Moon?

Write or draw.

The moon is between the Sun and the Earth, so the the lit side is facing the sun and the dark side is facing Earth.

What are the two special tidal patterns we have on Earth, due to the interactions between the Earth, Moon, and Sun?

1. Neap Tide

2. Spring Tide

200

How does a lunar eclipse occur?

Explain/draw

πŸŒ•  πŸŒŽ         β˜€οΈ

Moon, Earth, and Sun are in a straight line where the moon is in Earth's shadow, can't reflect sunlight.

200

Earth's revolution takes how long?

365.25 Days

300

What season is the Northern Hemisphere experiencing when the top half is tilted away from the sun?

Winter

300

What phase of the moon would be seen from Earth?

πŸŒ•

First Quarter Moon

300

What type of tidal pattern is experienced when the Moon is at a 90 degree angle from the Sun and Earth?

What is special about these tides?

Neap Tide

Weak Tides

300

How does a solar eclipse occur?

  🌎 πŸŒ•         β˜€οΈ

Earth, Moon, and Sun are in a straight line where the moon blocks out part of the sunlight.

300

What is responsible for Earth's day/night cycle?

Earth's rotation
400

Why does is it warmer at the equator than at the North Pole?

The equator gets more direct sunlight.

400

What is the positioning of the Earth, Moon, and Sun during a Waning Gibbous?

Write or Draw

Earth is roughly between the Sun and Moon, but the Moon has moved slightly ahead in its orbit, so it is no longer a full moon.

400

What tidal pattern is experienced when the Moon is either between the Earth and Sun, or opposite the Sun (other side of Earth) creating a straight line?

What is special about these tides?

Spring Tide

Extreme Tides

400

What is the umbra of an eclipse?

  • The darkest part of the shadow

  • All light from the Sun is blocked

  • If you're in the umbra, you see a total eclipse (total solar or total lunar)

400

What is the difference between rotation and revolution?

Rotation - When an object spins around its own axis

Revolution - When an object moves around another object in an orbit.

500

Why does the tilt of the Earth's axis cause summer to be warmer than winter in each of the hemispheres?

The tilt of the Earth on its axis causes the hemisphere to get more direct sunlight. More direct sunlight means higher temps. Less direct sunlight means lower temps.

500

Explain why we see the phases we do from Earth.

We see different phases of the Moon because of how sunlight hits the Moon (half lit, half dark) and how we view that illuminated part from Earth as the Moon orbits us, due to the angle.

500

What causes tides to happen?

1. The Moon’s gravity pulls on Earth’s oceans, pulling water toward it, creating a bulge of water (a high tide) on the side of Earth facing the Moon.

2. A second high tide forms on the opposite side because Earth is also being pulled slightly toward the Moon, water on the far side is β€œleft behind,” creating another high tide on the opposite side of Earth.

So there are two high tides and two low tides each day.

500

What is the penumbra of an eclipse?

  • The lighter, outer part of the shadow

  • Some sunlight is still visible

  • If you're in the penumbra, you see a partial or penumbral eclipse

500

Interactions between the Sun, Earth, and Moon cause what 4 things to occur?

Tides, Seasons, Moon Phases, and Eclipses
