He showed us what it looks like! At the beginning he was bouncing all over and not listening at all. At the end, he had a calm body, listened, and didn't interrupt people.
What does it mean to splat?
It means that when a problem of any size happens, you don't try to solve it, you have a bigger reaction than is necessary and you let it ruin your day and keep your feelings negative
What does, "actions have consequences" mean? Are all consequences negative?
It means that any choice you make will have a consequence. Not all consequences are negative.
What does independence look like in the classroom?
Working quietly, following directions the first time, staying at your space, cooperating with others, concentrating, talking at the volume you are directed to use, getting work completed and turned in

Being able to find ways to work through problems independently. Not needing a grown up to help solve everything.

It means you don't have big reactions to small problems, you don't let things ruin your day and you are able to move on and keep going.
In the story, our character was really tempted by a cake... did she show self control and what were the consequences?
She did not show self control, she ate the cake. Consequence was that she had to try and make an all new cake and her mom wasn't happy with her.
Is this showing independence? On the rug, you keep making silly faces and eye contact with a friend to get them to laugh. When everyone goes to their seats, you go to your friend and start whispering and talking.
Independence or not and what would need to change?
No! This is distracting others and not focusing on what you are supposed to be doing and being off task. Showing independence would be focusing on what the teacher is saying, quietly walking to your seat and getting started on work. No talking to others if that was the direction.
What is Mrs. Yates job called and what does she do?
School Counselor and she helps people! She listens and helps kids learn how to solve problems or work out friend issues or work through feelings. She teaches us skills we need to be good people.
What is the difference between a big and small problem?
Big Problems: Emergency, someone is hurt, not something you can handle on your own, make us have big feelings
Small Problems: something you can handle on your own, aren't a big deal, might feel sad/mad/frustrated but you can get over it easily, happen often
At recess, someone bumps into you and causes you to fall. You don't ask them if it was an accident and when they try to apologize you don't listen.

Splat would look like getting really upset or mad and yelling at the person or going and tattling and crying and yelling.
Bouncing back would look like listening to their apology and not letting it upset you and just moving on and continuing to play

First you ask yourself, what were the directions, if that doesn't work you then look around, are directions on the paper or the board or what are those around me doing. If that still doesn't work you quietly ask someone around you for help (ask up to 2 people) if all of those steps don't work you then finally ask an adult

Small problem. Can handle it on your own by using your words and talking to them about it, or walking away and playing with someone else.

What would it look like to splat and what would it look like to bounce back?
Splat would look like arguing with the teacher, crumpling up the paper, refusing to do the work, starting to cry and complain, etc.
Bouncing back would look like saying Ok and going and doing the work and turning it in again. No issues.

They are working on a sheet but you aren't sure exactly what to do. So you quietly lean over and ask the person next to you. They tell you what the directions are. You get to work!
