Why should I confess my sins to the priest instead of just telling Jesus I'm sorry in prayer?
Jesus told us to! He gave His apostles the authority to forgive sins, who then consecrated more men to be priests, who consecrated more men, etc. until the priests we have today. Jesus is the one who forgives our sins, and the priest stands in his place and acts as an instrument of God's mercy!
