What was the spark that led to WW1?
The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand by a Serbian terrorist group that was against the Austro-Hungarian government. They killed both him and his wife when the Archduke came to visit his country. This made the Austria-Hungary furious and demanded that they investigate the death (known as an ultimatum).

Why did Germany fight against Russia?

Serbia made a deal with Russia by forming an alliance to support each other whenever aid is needed during war time. Autria-Hungary declared war on Serbia (for what they have done to their archduke) and so Russia came in to cover for Serbia and they both were involved in a small war against Austria-Hungary. Germany declared war on Russia because Germany was a part of the Triple Alliances and wanted to protect Austria-Hungary from the Triple Entente in which is why Russia and Germany fought against each other.
