What is the difference between uncomplicated and complicated grief?

Uncomplicated grief – Most people going through the pain of grief will eventually adjust to the loss and return to normal life. Most do not require medication or counseling to manage uncomplicated grief and are able to go through their individual grieving process

Complicated grief – When grief becomes too painful and grows into something totally different, such as depression or anxiety. This is when grief is persistent and takes over a person’s life for years on end.

What is the normal grief process? (with definitions)

Acute grief - Immediately after a loss, and for months afterwards, it’s normal to have intense symptoms of shock, distress, sadness, poor appetite, sleep trouble and poor concentration. These symptoms will slowly diminish with the passage of time.

Integrated grief –The individual has accepted the reality of the loss and resumed daily activities. This does not mean that the pain related to their passing isn’t felt – the individual is able to cope with it. Acute grief may show again during holidays, anniversaries and other reminders.
