It seriously hurt South's economy. However, South began to use ironclads which easily sank Union's ships. After all though, the Union fleet forced Confederate ships to withdraw and the blockade continued.

African Americans were able to do things like marry and travel freely for the first time. Many African American women began to work at home instead of in fields. Others looked for family members from whom they had been separated during their years of enslavement.
