Functions of Behavior
A person’s own movements/actions feel good to that individual.
Automatic
A variety of procedures used to decrease the likelihood of the patient engaging in undesired behaviors.
Antecedent Strategies
A procedure that reinforces a behavior that appropriately replaces the problem behavior and meets the same function.
Differential Reinforcement of Alternative Behavior (DRA)
This type of assessment involves using interviews, checklists, rating scales, or questionnaires used to obtain information from people who are familiar with the person exhibiting the problem behavior.
Indirect Functional Assessment
The function of the behavior is to get away from a situation, condition, or stimulus.
Escape/Avoidance
The instruction given to evoke a response from a learner.
Discriminative Stimulus (SD)
A procedure that reinforces a behavior that cannot occur at the same time as the problem behavior.
Differential Reinforcement of Incompatible Behavior (DRI)
ABC recording and scatterplots are common tools used in this type of assessment.
Descriptive Functional Behavior Assessment
A person may engage in a certain behavior in order to interact with other people or get a reaction from them.
Attention
A procedure in which reinforcement of a previously reinforced behavior is discontinued, resulting in the behavior decreasing in the future.
Extinction
A procedure that reinforces the absence of the problem behavior on a predetermined interval.
Differential Reinforcement of Other Behavior
(DRO)
This records the behavior, as well as what immediate events preceded it and what occurred as a consequence.
ABC Recording
Some behaviors occur so the person can obtain a tangible item or engage in a desired activity.
Access
This includes the following procedures: parents will stay within 5 minutes of session at all times. If an emergency occurs during a session, staff will follow the behavior support plan, ensure that the environment is safe, and call the parents for assistance. If the emergency occurs outside of session, the family will call 911 for support.
Safety or Crisis Plan
A procedure that reinforces higher rates or more occurrences of a behavior.
Differential Reinforcement of High-Rates of Behavior (DRH)
A two-dimensional graph, recording the extent to which a target behavior occurs more often at particular times than others.
