Describe the Tea Act and the colonists' reaction to it.
Parliament passed this act to save the British East India Company from ruin. The act allowed the BEIC to ship tea to America without having to pay the high tax. This lowered the price of the BEIC's tea making it difficult for other companies to compete.
Colonial merchants denounced the act because:
1. It gave the BEIC exclusive control of tea trade in America
2. Would ruin many American tea merchants
3. Could set precedent for Parliament granting rights to other British firms
