100

The best possible (maximum) score you can get on the SAT.

What is 1600? (800 for Reading and Writing combined and 800 for two Math sections combined.)

100

The three types (topics) of reading passages you will see on the test.

What are literature, science (2), and history/social studies (2)?

100

How do you know what the question is asking on the Writing Test?

What is the answer choices ask the questions?

100

The number of geometry questions on the math test.

What is 6?

100

Mrs. James gave a test to her two geometry classes. The 24 students in her first-period class had a class average (mean) of 78. The average of the 26 students in her second-period class was 83. What was the average for all of the students who took the test?

(A) 80.5     (B) 80.6     (C) 81.2     (D) 81.4

What is (B) 80.6?

This question calls for a weighted average. First period students earned a total of 24 x 78 = 1,872 points, and second period students earned 26 x 83 = 2,158 points. In total 50 students earned 1,872 + 2,158 = 4,030 points, so their average was 4,030 / 50 = 80.6.

The average of 78 and 83 is 80.5. But since the second-period class is slightly larger, the average must be slightly larger than 80.5. The best answer is 80.6, which is slightly greater than 80.5

200

The strategy of ruling out wrong answers to improve your odds of getting an answer correct.

What is Process of Elimination?

200

After determining which passage you want to work on first, what should you read first?

What are the questions (not the whole passage)?

200

Which pronoun should be used in the sentence below?

Just as some teenagers adore video games, so others condemn (it or them) as an utter waste of time.

What is them? What do the teenagers condemn? Video games. The noun phrase video games is plural; the pronoun referring to these games must be plural as well. Some adore video games; others condemn them.

200

What order of operations should you follow when solving math problems?

What is PEMDAS (parenthesis/exponents, multiplication/division, addition/subtraction)?

200

If 3/11 of a number is 22, what is 6/11 of that number?

(A) 11     (B) 12     (C) 33     (D) 44

What is (D) 44?

Since 6/11 is twice 3/11, 6/11 of a number is twice 3/11 of that number: 2x22=44.

Or use your calculator: 3/11(x)=22, x=22/(3/11), which = 80.6666, and 6/11(80.6666)=44

300

The strategy of answering questions you believe are easier first.

What is Personal Order of Difficulty (POOD)?

300

When a line reference is given for a passage, how many lines above and below the passage should you read?

What is 10 to 12?

300

Name two types of things being tested in the underlined section on a writing question?

What are transitions, verbs, pronouns, vocabulary, concision?

300

The majority / more than half of the questions on the math test are about this subject?

What is Algebra I/II?

300

What is the volume of a cube whose surface area is 150?

(A) 25     (B) 125     (C) 1,000     (D) 15,625

What is (B) 125?

The formula for the surface area of a cube is A=6e2, where e is the length of each edge. So 150=6e2, e2=150/6, e2=25, e=5. Then since the formula for the volume of a cube is V=e3, the volume is 53=125.

400

The number of questions and length of time given for each section of the test.

What is

Reading - 52 questions, 65 minutes

Writing - 44 questions, 35 minutes

Math (No Calculator) - 20 questions, 25 minutes

Math (Calculator) - 38 questions, 55 minutes

Optional Essay - 50 minutes

400

Name two of the six types of reading questions you will see on the test?

What are general, paired, quantitative, main idea, dual passage, and charts and graphs?

400

Pick the correct modifier in the sentence below:

Our band sounds (different or differently) now that we've added a clarinet player to the group.

What is different?

Distinguish between adjectives and adverbs to make the appropriate choice. Different is an adjective. It modifies the noun band. The linking verb is sounds. The predicate adjective is different. It sounds like a different band.

400

How many grid in questions are on the math test?

What is 13? (5 on the no calculator section, 8 on calculator section)

400

Bob and Jack share an apartment. If each month Bob pays a dollars and Jack pays b dollars, what percent of the total cost does Bob pay?

(A) a/b %   (B) b/a %   (C) a/(a+b) %   (D) 100a/(a+b) %

What is (D) 100a/(a+b)%?

The total rent is a+b, so Bob's fractional share is a/(a+b). To convert to a percent, simply multiply by 100%: 100a/(a+b) %.

500

The number of and which specific months in which the SAT test is administered.

What is seven; March, May, June, August and October, November, and December.

500

In the Reading section of the test, you will be asked to do these five types of things.

What is:
determining the meaning of words in context,
deciding why an author included a certai detail,
finding the main idea of a whole passage,
comparing two passages, OR
pinpointing information on a graph.

500

Choose the correct preposition in the sentence below:

The princess was unable to decide (among or between) her two persistent suitors.

What is between?

The princess was unable to decide between them. Note that the princess has only two suitors. Use the preposition among to refer to groups of three or more, the preposition between to refer to groups of two.

500

What do you do if a question has a diagram that has been drawn to scale?

What is trust your eyes and make a good estimate.

On the SAT, every diagram is perfectly drawn to scale, unless you see the words "Note: Figure not drawn to scale" beneath it.

500

Depending on road conditions and the speed at which he drives, John's car gets between 20 and 30 miles per gallon of gas. If John drives 600 miles and pays between $2.50 and $3.00 per gallon for gasoline, which of the following could be his total cost for gas on the trip?

I. $40     II. $70     III. $100

(A) I only   (B) II only   (C) I & II only   (D) II & III only

What is (B) II only?

If John gets 30 miles per gallon on the entire trip, he will use 600/30=20 gallons of gas.

If he gets 20 mpg on the entire trip, he will use 600/20=30 gallons of gas.

The least the trip could cost is 20 x $2.50 = $50

The most the trip could cost is 30 x $3.00 = $90.

So the total cost for gas on the trip could be any amount between $50 and $90.
